We are especially grateful to Frank Atkinson, Terry Blackman and Peter Webb for their efforts in providing topical shots for this feature, and to Richard Lewis to arranging production of the four illustrated pages.\par \tab Further articles will appear over the next three months relating to Club tours and publications, and the early days of the Club. We should like to complete this suite in November and December by carrying articles about Club photographs and vehicle preservation. If any members feel able to help in drafting such articles your Editor would be pleased to hear from them as soon as possible.\par \tab Attention is drawn to the enclosed circular giving details of our Jubilee Lunch which will be held in \cf1 Maidstone\cf0 on Saturday \cf1 5th\cf0 October. We decided to investigate alternative sources of supply, whilst wishing to maintain quality standards;\par \u9679?\tab Review of events attended so far during the season, noting particular success for the sales stand at Cobham. It was felt that it was time to make the Club's sales stand less anonymous in appearance;\par \u9679?\tab Receipt of increased annual subscriptions from all but four part-owners of HKE 867, together with a healthy level of donations and new share purchases, had contributed to financial security for the vehicle this year;\par \u9679?\tab Successful bookings for the first two tours of the season and encouraging signs for the special Golden Arrow trip on 17th August, most of which will be worked by preserved vehicles. However, it was decided to cancel the London feeder, as the interest expressed was completely unviable;\par \u9679?\tab It will be necessary for participants in depot visits on future Club tours to wear fluorescent yellow safety jackets, as a Health & Safety requirement. The satisfactory outcome of the Deal running day, and our involvement as co-organisers of the Tunbridge Wells event on 8th September, were also discussed. Appropriate messages from senior figures in the industry would be solicited for publication in November's News-Sheet, marking the true 50th anniversary date;\par \u9679?\tab Satisfactory commissioning of new computer equipment. There having been no offers for redundant equipment, surplus typewriters had been dumped. The old computer would be offered for recycling to a charity handling such matters.\par \pard\hyphpar0\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\tab Comments from members on these or any other relevant matters will be welcomed for the next meeting, to be held on 21st September.\tab Nicholas King, Secretary\par \par \b NEWS-SHEET\b0 : At its meeting on 6th July, Management Committee devoted much time to considering recent experiments in News-Sheet format, and future possibilities.\par \tab The minor changes which have been introduced in the past two months, such as those to sectional headings and format, will continue, with slight modifications. Most members will have noted that we have been using an updated font, which provides a little more space between the vertical lines, and this has been welcomed, though it does mean that more paper is needed to cover the same amount of news, with cost implications. The August News-Sheet will be produced using \f3 Arial font,\f1 which has been strongly endorsed in consultative pre-trials circulated to a small group of members, and we shall welcome comments on this from the wider membership when it happens.\par \tab Management Committee has also given detailed consideration to the prospects of converting the News-Sheet to A5 format from January 2003. This is a topic which has been suggested by members on a fairly regular basis in recent years, and indeed most other societies have adopted it.\par \expndtw0\tab This would bring undoubted benefits of presentation, though a decision will be strongly informed by financial considerations. Certainly more space will be needed to carry the same amount of information : to put it very simply, imagine our standard A4 sheet, and then take out the middle eight or so lines to represent the "gutter" required for A5 presentation when the sheet is turned on its side and folded. The June News-Sheet, for instance, which reached a modest 13 sides of A4, would occupy almost 32 sides of A5 (equivalent of 16 sides of A4), increasing space requirements and therefore costs by 23%. In months when there is more news to report, and when we already knock firmly on the doors of the 60g weight limit for the package, this would push the postage cost into the second weight band, adding a further 14p per month to the subscription. Then there are the additional production costs of folding, saddle-stitching (centre staples) and trimming; and these processes would add another one or two working days to the production process, meaning that News-Sheets would reach members rather less topically.\par \tab A very conservative estimate is that conversion to A5 would require subscriptions to increase by at least \'a32 per year, exclusive of normal inflation-related costs. We are of course mindful that this may deter some members from renewing, in turn increasing the unit cost still further to others.\par \tab Members will therefore appreciate that decisions will not be as simple as some might think. We are anxious to continue providing as good a service to members as we can, acknowledging that in some respects the News-Sheet may have got stuck in a rut presentationally. At the same time, we are also mindful of our duty to achieve results as economically as possible.\par \tab All of these issues will be debated fully at the next meeting of Management Committee, when decisions (including subscription rates) will be taken for the period from January 2003.\par \tab At the same time, we shall also consider whether the News-Sheet should be given a more up-to-date title. For instance, "Journal" has been used by our friends at the Southdown Enthusiasts' Club for some time now, whilst "The London Bus" (LOTS) and "The Omnibus Magazine" (OS) will be familiar titles to most. Ideas in this direction would be welcomed.\par \par \b CLUB LIBRARY\b0 : A need has arisen for assistance in storing some of those materials which are borrowed less often. We should be grateful to hear from any member who can offer storage space, ideally in the East Kent area so as to facilitate retrieval in case of demand, though arrangements can be made further afield if necessary.\par \par \b KENT RELIANCE BUILDING SOCIETY\b0 : Publicity issued to shareholders in the early spring recommended them to "keep your eyes peeled for the Kent Reliance buses on the road near you - if you live in the Medway, Maidstone or Canterbury areas". However, there appear to be no plans for the introduction of allover advertisements vehicles as implied.\par \par \b WEST KENT COACH SALES\b0 : Variant titles have appeared here and elsewhere in recent months for this dealership. The proprietors tell us that the title changed earlier this year to West Kent Bus and Coach Sales. Records should be adjusted appropriately under the various headings where they have appeared.\par \expndtw-2\par \b CLUB WEB-SITE\b0 : The Club web-site can be accessed at mdekbusclub.org.uk.\par \pard\brdrb\brdrs\brdrw20\brsp20 \hyphpar0\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\par \pard\hyphpar0\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\par \par \par \par \par \pard\hyphpar0\qc\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757 - 02/80 -\par \pard\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\expndtw0\b\fs28 ARRIVA SOUTHERN COUNTIES\par \b0\fs18\par \tab The Company confirm that some vehicles which have recently been reinstated to stock from the disposal list will be returned to service. These, and the arrival of the twelve DAF double-deckers from London United, will lead to a number of vehicle movements in the coming months.\par \tab The DAFs, which will be numbered 6201-12, are planned to be allocated to Gillingham (3, primarily for 700/701) and Tunbridge Wells (9). They will remain as dual-door, and will receive corporate livery. At this stage it has not been decided whether any of those at Tunbridge Wells will be in red (for the 402). Despite last month's report that DN11 (R211 TKO) had left London United, and another report that all are now at the Arriva London North workshops at Enfield to be prepared for transfer, including inspection and the rectification of any defects which may be found before they return to Kent, all except DN6 (R206 TKO) were confirmed still parked at Fulwell on 12th July.\par \tab Arriva Maidstone Limited (registration number 3943276) was incorporated at Companies House on 9th March 2000. This is reported to have been a Leyland TS8/Harrington C32F (modified to C33F when reinstated in 5/55 following first withdrawal in 1/54), the bodywork of which suggests it was of M&D origins. It is further thought that it arrived from the Ministry of Supply following wartime requisitioning. Local taxation records confirm that it was a diesel-engined vehicle.\par \tab The only Leyland diesel/Harrington coach which might fit this description is 555 (DKT 13), which passed to Samuelson, Victoria in 2/38 and left them in c1943, being subsequently untraced. It was almost certainly requisioned; similar 554 (DKT 12) returned to M&D in 3/47 from the Ministry of Supply, having also been with Samuelson at the same dates. However, these were TS\ul 7\ulnone rather than TS8.\par \par \pard\qc\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757 - 02/84 -\par \pard\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\tab Further research has shown that BG 9065 was rebodied by Harrington in c3/48 with body number 319, which falls between M&D CO86/7 (KKK 825/6). Whilst it is possible from this that the body was to the same design as then specified by M&D, the chassis, and therefore the vehicle as a whole, are probably \i not\i0 of M&D origin. The chassis number at this point is reported as 23248, which fits no recognised Leyland sequence of the period. It may have been contrived from the date of rebuilding, or may have been a War Department ambulance number.\par \tab Can anyone throw any further light on these issues?\par \b\i Ex-Boro'line Maidstone (as dealer)\b0\i0 - Latest sighting for disposal vehicle : 6/02 - CKM 138Y.\par \par \par \b\fs24 CHATHAM & DISTRICT\b0\par \fs18\par \pard\brdrb\brdrs\brdrw20\brsp20 \qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\b ENTHUSIASTS' GUIDE 1952\b0 : A couple of members have pointed out that "Reliance information" under the trade plates heading on page 38 should of course read "Reliable information".\par \par \pard\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\par \pard\keepn\s9\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\b\fs28 STAGECOACH SOUTH EAST\par \pard\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\b0\fs24\par \pard\keepn\s1\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\b EAST KENT (Stagecoach in East Kent)\par \pard\qj\tx360\tx720\tqr\tx10757\b0\par \b\fs18 LOANS\b0 : Amongst coach loans to SCB at Hastings, 8906 (V906 DPN) was replaced by 8913 (M913 WJK) on 13th June and by 8914 (M914 WJK) on 20th or 21st June. 8914 remained away on 6th July.\par \tab 23 (R823 HCD) was loaned to South Coast Buses from 4th to 10th July for route survey work.\par \par \b ALLOCATIONS\b0 : The following are officially listed for the period :\par \tab 296 (R296 HCD) C-DO 18. 6.02\par \tab 299 (R299 HCD) DO-C 18. 6.02\par \tab Subsequently 7270 was taken out of service at FK on 25th June.\par \tab\b\i Loans\b0\i0 . On at least 8th June, double-deckers were used. A Park & Ride service was also operated at West Malling on 2nd June, and a shuttle service for Cliffe Carnival on 15th June.
